Two pipe steam system's return vent buried in insulation batt!

I am trying to track down our 2 pipe steam system's return vents. One of them is in the basement ceiling joists buried under a roll of insulation, and has been for years, it looks like (we moved into our home relatively recently). The paper covering of the batt is singed. Should I remove the batt totally after masking and gloving up? It can't be good for a vent to be covered in fibreglass.

It's not singed, it's just discolored from water. There is no fire risk, but yes there should be open air surrounding the vent.
Good job tracking it down.NJ Steam Homeowner.

Thanks for the response. Luckily this one was at the periphery of the ceiling so somewhat easy to locate. The return piping is mostly hidden by the ceiling acoustic tiles so there could well be other vents similarly buriedethicalpaul said:It's not singed, it's just discolored from water.
