One of those days (this was the least of the problems)

Main vents are best mounted on pipe nipples above the mains to keep the water out. If they get water inside, they tend to spit while they're venting air, and it might look like steam, but dry steam is invisible until it hits something cold and condenses. The real test is to determine if the vent is still venting after it gets hot. If the vent body is 200° or so, it shouldn't be venting anything.Just another DIYer | King of Prussia, PA

They might have been flooded with gunk at some time past. You might try rinsing them out or replacing them. I've had very good results with both Gorton and MoM #1 vents (MoM if you like to spend less money)
