Goodman 2 stage heat pump short cycling

I’m running my 6 yo 2 ton/2 stage Goodman heat pump during shoulder season and noticed today the heat pump compressor will start run, run for a short period (1-2 minutes) then shut down. The behavior keeps repeating every few minutes. Call for heat is on throughout.

The unit has been operating properly up until the last day or so. Any suggestion on what to check first?

@Erin Holohan Haskell - I placed this discussion on the main wall in error. Can you move it to the” A-C, Heat Pumps and Refrigeration” category? Thanks!

Are both the indoor and outdoor fans running? Filters clean?

Beyond that, it could be any number of issues.

@Ironman - yes both fans are running.  I also checked the starter capacitor and it pass electrical and visual check.

The upstairs filter needed replacing, thanks for that reminder ( :( )

I shut down the system for 30 minutes and it started cleanly.

Low pressure switch will open with low charge, close when pressure recovers and restart, and repeat. (Momma, she could be a leaker!)

In AC mode, a plugged TXV (or any part of the liquid line) will pump comp down and give you this symptom. (Defrost mode is AC mode minus the outdoor fan operation)

In heat mode the liquid coming back to condenser usually is metered thru an orifice piston in the outside unit. Sometimes a TXV, so might have the same symptoms the AC pump down mode give you.

you can check to see if the pressure switch(es) is the control opening the circuit by putting a voltmeter across it, it will go to 24vac if it opens. you can look at the coils for icing as well.

I’m thinking Bob (@Ironman)had it right on when he recommended checking the filter. Visually it looks very clean. However the recent drywall work in the house put a lot of dust in the air which clogged it up. I replaced it and everything seems to be humming along nicely now.
