Once I finally get gas ran into the house from the street I’d like to get a Navien combi boiler. Is it possible to have the combi installed and just use the hot water off of it temporarily?

Um... yeah, but why? If you want the tankless hot water heater feature, why not start with a purpose built tankless hot water heater, and add a similarly purpose built (and properly sized) boiler later? The end result will likely be more satisfactory and efficient anyway...Br. Jamie, osb

Personally I would stay away from a wall hung combi and especially once made from that manufacturer.
Stick with a properly sized boiler and indirect tank.3 -
