air handler filter

Our SpacePak air handler uses a 14x30x1 filter. Okay, I just read some info online. Apparently, an inexpensive $2 fiberglass filter is a MERV 1 through 4. We don't have pets or allergies. Does anyone recommend higher than a MERV 8?

MERV 8 or less0

MERV 8 or less is great advice, and there are some pleated filters with that rating. That is what I gave my service agreement customers at no extra charge on maintenance agreement visits.
The fiberglass filters are there to protect the motor only. A wet evaporator coil can trap more dust than those do. Go with the MERV 8 even if you need to order them on the internet because no one has them in stock locally. (but they are better than nothing until you bet the one you want.)Edward Young Retired
After you make that expensive repair and you still have the same problem, What will you check next?
