Dan, thank you for these stories. I just lost my Dad last week and he was an old-school steam and hydronic heating master like some of the ones you talk about here. He learned the trade in Yonkers, NY from his father, who himself was a steam fitter and plumbing man back in the Philly and then Brooklyn Navy yards building battleships and many now-defunct factories along the Hudson River.

I learned the rudiments of the trade from my father by tagging along with him as a kid, but I have spent my 25+ year career in healthcare and did not follow in his footsteps professionally . Your blog and forum remind me of him and the irreplaceable knowledge that he possessed and gained over 60 years of hands on experience. His garage is full of large, primitive looking tools whose purpose and manner of use is lost to time.

I will check back here now and then and think of my father. Thank you for keeping this knowledge alive.

@Ken_B Sorry to hear about your dad.

If you get the chance, show us some of those tools. We'd like to see them.
