Banging riser

What would cause a riser to bang horribly in only one apartment in a 21 floor building?

    Indeed. A sag -- or badly pitched -- horizontal section somewhere along that particular riser. It could be in the basement -- but it also could be between floors somewhere. More likely the latter, if it is just one apartment.

    If it's one pipe steam, somebody could have tried to modulate their heat with the valve too!
