So from a thermodynamic standpoint reducing the temperature inside reduces the amount of heat required to maintain and indoor temperature. How could it not?
It is all based on temperature difference between inside and outside.
The issue becomes the time required to come back from that lower setpoint, cost and comfort factor.
If you have a heating system that can recover that setback quickly and comfortably then yes a setback can save energy and operating cost.
I think a moderate 3- 5° makes sense for most.
With the door closed and TRV on the radiators we are able to keep the bedroom about 5° cooler than the living areas. If needed we can reach out of bed and crank the TRV up before you get out from under the covers.
Back when Honeywell promoted the first Chrontherm setback stats I feel they may have gone too deep with the temperature setback suggestions. Recovery time became an issue.
Put 6 people in a room and each one could have a different definition of comfort and temperature.
68°F used to be fine, comfortable for me, I'm crowding 72° now as I get olderBob "hot rod" Rohr
