Gorton No 1

Very basic question:

I just bought a Gorton No 1 to replace an older, mis-sized Hoffman as a main vent. It was delivered today and it leaks a lot of steam from the vent hole even when fully heated. It seems to stop hissing when the low pressure gauge reads 1.5psi but as soon as pressure drops it hisses again.

I have had this happen in the past and a new vent fixes the issue.

Is this a faulty vent? I have a hard time believing that a brand new vent would be faulty but maybe rough shipping displaced the valve stem or seat?

Hi, I'd be tempted to call the supplier and tell them what you told us and see what their response is. They might want to exchange it for a newer one. B) Any chance debris from the pipe is getting caught in the valve seat?

I would say it's faulty. I have a Gorton #1 and a Maid O Mist #1 running side by side and they both fully close and stay closed when the steam hits them.

I don't think that is likely. It hissed on the first steam cycle and the hoffman in there previously worked like a champ (although it vented more slowly.

just curious if there was some magic I could do or if that behavior was in some way normal. I am sure the vendor will take it back as a defect.

Thanks @ethicalpaul . I'll let it run a few more cycles and if it refuses to fully seat then I'll return it.

all of my other Gortons fully seal.

Maybe try smacking it around a little in case the mechanism got hung up in shipping or something.

Thanks. Tried that. Removed it and jiggled it a little too. Seems like the internals are moving freely. might be doing a little better but definitely not fully seating yet.

I'll keep an eye on it.
