Was looking at gas boilers and a contractor said that we would need a chimney liner which would cost $. It says that the burnham esc can be direct vented so instead of a chimney can we just vent the exhaust through the side of the house.

Sidewall venting is possible with some gas boilers.

Yes it can be side wall vented. Look at https://files.gitshare.io/link/9gTW_UlKrss/ESC I&O.pdf

I was also wondering are mod con boilers really a nightmare to deal with? We have only had regular boilers so far and dont really do annual service. We go years without major repairs. Do you guys know any mod cons that are also bulletproof reliable.

If we decide to get the esc, so we can forego an expensive chimney liner how can we run the boiler with max efficiency?
