Another Steamer

We ripped out this 15 year old steamer that had a crack on top corner of the one of the sections and 2 corrosion holes on other sections due to to much make up water.
Installed Peerless 63-04 with 3” drop header, water seal, analog water meter with resettable counter.
We also move the big mouth vents that the homeowner installed at the end of the 2” mains to the end of the 11/4” mains.
Still need to go back to do more skimming and replace the cycle guard to a safeguard.

Nice! Any idea why the crack on the corner? Due to a manufacturing fault I wonder? Or is there some other possible cause?

Theory. Castings or billets made in china.

On this site seen to many failures similar to this one.

What is going on with American made Steam boilers.

I remember the cheap Bryant boilers with thinner castings to improve heat transference efficiency lasting 20 to 30 years.

That's an older Utica or Columbia- I doubt it was made in China.

Did you find any leaks, such as bad vents or loose valve packings?

Thank you all for the kind words.
Along with the boiler replacement we replaced about 5’ of steam main that was copper which was between two radiator riser take off and all 4 joints where leaking.
We are going back next week to skim and wand the boiler some more, at that time we will go around and see if anything else in the system is leaking. Couldn’t tell what else was leaking on the initial consultation because the boiler would go into low water in less then an hours.

    Beautiful work!

Does Peerless allow a reduction in flue diameter from the factory breeching?

Doesn't look like the existing chimney breech was touched. What's in there? Liner?

@HVACNUT that reducer came with the draft hood. I’ve spoken to Peerless about this the first time I noticed that they started packaging the reducer with the draft hood about over a year ago. The chimney was lined when at the time of the previous boiler was installed.
