Contractor hit a buried gas line. It remains to be seen if they had the site marked before digging.

I work in Durham. News reports quotes 811 as saying that lines were "likely" marked. They were running fiber. Still dont have clear reporting but you know with fiber runs, you could be a block away.0

It is starting to look like everything was done in accordance with the law, using experienced contractors.
This might, sadly, be a case of human error.
The evacuation was near textbook perfect. If the coffee shop owner would have evacuated, there would have been zero deaths. In all likelihood, between 9:30-10am, his shop had a cooking appliance working. Maybe he was trying to shut them off to prevent an explosion.
