on single pipe radiator, upper or lower? Does it matter in amount of heat the radiator would generate?

Most cast iron radiators have a boss -- often with a convenient dimple -- about half to two thirds the way up the end section. Sometimes a little lower. That's where you want the vent. On the end opposite the inlet, of course.
If it's at the top, steam will get to it and close it very quickly reducing your heat. I've never seen one at the bottom...Br. Jamie, osb
