I love this industry as I learn and see new things all the time. In my 3 plus decades I have never seen what I saw twice this winter. The system pressure for these two hydronic systems had dropped low enough to cause cavitation and loud banging in the pipes and pumps. I was ready to call an exorcist. The water was not low enough to trip the low water cutoff. I am wondering if a pressure switch which senses the static pressure should be installed on future jobs. Perhaps set it for 10 Psig so if the pressure drops below that, an alarm sounds or the system shuts off. Would love your opnion.

Considering the amount of damage that cavitation can do -- never mind the noise -- might not be a bad idea at all. Right near the pump inlet.

Isn't that what the old school muchkins used for LWCO? Some TT I think have pressure switches too. I had a job where the pump was pumping into the exp tank and out of the boiler (TT solo), it would drop the pressure on the boiler supply enough to cause it to fault on low water, moved the pump and it was fine.

Jamie It was scary inside the boiler room with the banging and shaking.
Delta, never heard that. Smart of you to figure out a solution
    Big Ed, never knew that
    Ebebratt-Ed thanks for the feedback

I think a low pressure switch is almost a better safety than a LWCO on closed loop pressurized systems. A manufacturer should incorporate one in their LWCO! See if anyone is listening.
