Does a system that has zone valves and no flow check require an Ifc circulator

Usually no, but it depends on how its piped. Are you getting ghost flow in the zones not calling for heat?

If your zone valves are controlled by your t-stats directly and you have a indirect hot water tank that has DHW Priority enabled, the zone valves will remain open when the indirect tank circulator is running.
If you didn't have a flow-check on/after the spaceheating circulator in this case you would get reverse flow through the spaceheating loops with energized zone valves.
