Any hints for why a Boiler mate hot water heater doesn't work ?

I would have bet on the crappy digital control...

Is the Amtrol Boilermate old or new. The older ones had a small heat exchanger with high head loss. But, you didn't specify why you think it didn't work. There is a boiler somewhere in the mix + a circulator + piping. It's just a storage tank with a heat exchanger. Can't get more simple than that.
