Near boiler piping

Hi,
I was called to look at this steam system. I noticed the return pipe was cut and capped. Where is the best place to add the return? Would adding a tee for the return above the water supply tee too high? It looks like it would then enter at or above water line? Is it a big issue if the headers are coming from the sides of the boiler? Thank you

Step one should be repiping the boiler in black iron. Find and follow the manufacturers specifications. You’ll be able to incorporate your return connection this way as well. How is the water returning now, back through the mains? That water hammer must be epic.

Yes through the mains. It sounds like a war zone.

Looks like a counter flow system. Are there any proper returns? As Sully said, repipe the boiler.

Is that a PRV in the fill line?

Returns should be tied in below the boiler water line, otherwise they will fill with steam and the hammering will continue. Also, those joints in all that copper pipe will crack and leak due to expansion/contraction. Replace it with black threaded pipe.

I always saw the headers from the top of the boiler will it cause issues to have the headers coming of the sides? Thank you

    There's no other option: that's the way it's made. It's a rebadged Dunkirk/Utica.

Are the mains pitched back toward the boiler or away from it?
