Oil fired steam repipe

1997 installed Weil-McLain SGO-5 really crappy pipe work and about 100 EDR oversized. So I decided on a 4” header to get some dry steam to the radiators. Also returns were tied together above the water line and that was creating problems. Enjoy the pics.

Nice. And, the SGO boilers run real nice with Carlin gas burners in them.

@Steamhead Before next heating season that’s what he wants to do. Carlin EZ Gas, right now the oil tank is full.

    Nice job!

I go for increasing the riser size as soon as you get out of the boiler as you have done.

I always felt keeping the water in the boiler in the first place is better than separating it in the header but some don't agree with me.

I think doing that one simple thing makes the header design less critical

The HO got the vaporstat on eBay brand new NOS for only $40 bucks and it works perfectly. Yes it’s a mercury bulb.

  • Keeping all the water in the boiler does have one drawback: a drop header will tend to collect all the oily surface water over a period of time, and keep it in the equalizer. A nice ball valve on a tee at waterline height would enable the oily layer to be drained off.—NBC

Added a hot water loop to the boiler for the basement heating using the domestic coil location .

Solder , "old school" , lol. Man I'll bet the owners have seen a dramatic performance difference already. Nice job , a lot of work there for this time of year especially.

Is there a coil where you connected or is it just a blank off plate ?

Yeah lol, I don’t know when I’m going to put the torch down, eventually I suppose.

There was a coil block off plate there originally, I just added a brand newcoil for the basement heat loop.

A special thanks to Dave and his dad Walt for a great job. I haven't posted on this forum since 2006 and needed to get my login sorted out. I can't wait to have the boiler converted to gas. The cost of natural gas compared to oil in the NJ area is almost 1/3 the price. The carlin EZ gas seems like the best conversion burner for the SGO boiler.
