Dunkirk Quantum 90 - Loud Banging

I just moved into a 22 year old house with a Dunkirk Quantum 90 Gas fired direct vent heating system. Last night it started making a banging noise so loud I thought the thing was exploding. The whole system and connected pipes shake visibly when it happens. Our home warranty company sent a guy to look at it who said it's perfectly safe and just needs to be cleaned, which I don't buy for a second. He said it's slow to fire, and when it does it goes off like a bomb. He turned it on and it's providing heat but booms and bangs every time it fires up. We can't get any service for a couple of days, so my wife and kids are home with the auto-bomb.

If anyone has any experience with these units I'd love their opinion.

Sounds to me like delayed ignition -- which could have a number of causes, but is not good. You need to get a really qualified tech. out there to take a look and probably clean and certainly adjust things so it doesn't do that.

Forget your home warranty company (which contracts with the lowest bidder rather than the most qualified) and find a local pro who can fix this . Remember that the contractors hired by a home warranty company are working for warranty company and not you. The home warranty company profit is the motive and the fewer or cheapest repairs than can do maximizes that .

Did you resolve the boom noise? If not, type UB-90 in the search box at the top right side of this page and you may be enlightened. I had a Utica UB-90 which I believe is the same boiler, same issue.
