Some steam main repairs

Replaced about 10’ of steam main that was rotted rather badly, to the point is was flaking steel off the pipes. I forgot before pics, although the carcasses reside in my van for the time being lol. Also replaced a dry return drop as that was rotted through. Eventually we will be repiping the whole boiler with a drop header, the boiler is only a year old, previous contractor pulled an 11 year old identical unit out and slid this one in and ran, didn’t replace one pipe leaking or not. Will also be adding radiators back to missing locations, this is a big boiler have yet to do an EDR. Peerless 63-04 177,000 btu, I also

added a two stage setup to keep pressures low.

Hey that’s my boiler! I’ve been lurking on this site for about a year learning about steam heat after our boiler went and we had it replaced.

Dave, I couldn’t be happier with the finished result. Not only did you fix the leaking steam main and return piping that should have been corrected by the previous installer, you also resolved the problem we were having with spitting radiators.

The previous installer used the existing piping to install the new boiler reassuring us that the old piping was in good condition. He cautioned that if he replaced the piping in question, it would cause leaks in other areas of the mains. Well, less than a week later the return piping began leaking and I noticed water stains in the insulation covering the steam main. While we were unable to get the original contractor to fix the leaks, we were able to get through the winter with the old setup.

When I called Dave this year he came out and was very transparent with the process of getting the heating system running correctly. Once we agreed on a start date, he showed up when he said he would and did the work he quoted me on. He even left my basement cleaner than it was when he started working. Above all else I’m really pleased with his workmanship. The pictures don’t do the repairs justice. Can’t wait to have the header redone. My only regret is not having you do the install to begin with.
