1980 circa Weil-McLain 566 started leaking. Must be a late 66 model as this boiler was gasketed. Anyway out it came, counterflow steam main. Day one down. Header installed.

Btw the 66, and 68 Series boilers have to be the worst boilers to clean, it’s all but impossible to get to certain areas and they give you little port holes to clean through, all these boilers I’ve tested have high CO.

Got a bit further, unfortunately it’s no rush as there is no gas in the house and we're waiting for the utility to bring it in. Had to run the condensate return this way because that point is the lowest in the main.

Boiler install complete. Heats quietly evenly, and I love seeing the oz gauge dip into a vacuum when the burner turns off for about 5 mins. Next week we’ll install a radiator in the kitchen and reconnect a loooong disconnected 2nd fl radiator, someone cut the runout pipe and put a rubber expansion plug in the pipe because of pipe corrosion.

This site is amazing, I am learning so much about my own steam boiler here.

What is the vertical pipe, coming off the mains, on the right side of the boiler? What does it do?

My WM doesn't have that and I don’t remember seeing in other pictures.

    Thank you

I would guess for condesent, as it would not make it over the second drop header

That pipe is the actual return as this system is a counterflow steam main. The main also returns the condensate.

A continuation of the same job with more work. First up is reconnect a looong, probably 30 years disconnected radiator. Original home owner apparently had a leak on a 2nf floor radiator runout. I guess the obvious solution was to cut the pipe in half and stick a rubber expansion plug in it. Once I removed the plug I could see the bad condition the pipe was in and realized it would have to be removed back to the up feed tee and repiped. Was a success and the radiator heated for the first time in a loong time.

Next up, install a new radiator in the kitchen. The old radiator was removed a loooong time ago, probably in the 70s, problem was new cabinets and a sink occupied the original location, so a new location had to determined, once figured we had to cut the main and repipe accordingly, all went well and the kitchen has heat for the the first time in a looong time.
