Best Aquastat setting for steam system w/o domestic hot water

I have an oil fired one pipe steam system that does a great job of heating our home. The system does not provide hot water, which is provided separately by electric hot water tanks.

There is an Aquastat on the side of the boiler, presumably from a time in the past when domestic hot water came from this system.

It was recommended to me by a heating tech that during the winter, we leave it set at around 160 in order to save fuel that would otherwise be needed to heat the water up anew every time there is a call for heat. I guess the theory would be that the boiler runs more often but for shorter durations, and also that the heating cycle is shortened.

Is this a prudent recommendation?

Thanks for your help,
Dustin

Not really. The hotter the boiler is, the more standby loss up the chimney.

Better yet have it removed from the system as it serves no useful purpose anymore.
