I think the smartest thermostats would tell you when to set back temperatures, and when not to.
A/C can benefit, but heating may not, if the setback period is too short in a well insulated and sealed house. Heating comfort can always benefit from a constant lower temperature setting.
If you go away on a few days vacation, and use a setback, then that is a different story.--NBC0 -
Does heating follow different rules of physics than cooling?nicholas bonham-carter said:I think the smartest thermostats would tell you when to set back temperatures, and when not to.

Both heating and cooling comfort generally benefit from a constant temperature, but the wallet doesn't.
My current opinion is I'm really happy with my Honeywell Prestige. I'd recommend it over any "Smart" thermostat any day. It also doesn't need a C wire which many are missing, just two wires to the mechanical room.Single pipe quasi-vapor system. Typical operating pressure 0.14 - 0.43 oz. Good point Chris.
I just had a non-scientific gut reaction that cooling the air could benefit from setback, whereas radiator heating which heats the objects in the room would not.
In both cases some of the energy savings from the setback period will be used up during the recovery. Getting the radiant flywheel moving again may use more than the cooling of air.--NBC0
