AIR ELIMINATION PORT ON BOILER

I noticed that i have a Air Elimination port on top of my steam boiler. The port is capped but there is a note thats says it is optional. What is this air elimination port? I believe i have a 1 pipe gravity return system and I thought venting just needed to occure at the end on the mains and the radiators. Is there any advantage or disadvantage to incoorporating the vent on the boiler?
