That is awful. Like were back in the 1900s again. Water to steam increase in volume 1700 times.
a box 28" x 28" x 28" filled with water changes to steam the box required to hold the steam volume is now 28' x 28' x 28'0 -
Seems like OSHA has fined alot in the past. So I'm guessing maintenance and preventive maintenance on the boiler was severely lacking.

I agree, it wasn't cast iron or it would have been blown to bits and wouldn't have been cylindrical anyway. More likely scotch marine.0
