Yes, I would love it if I could find someone to service this beast but I've already had 3 people here and they won't touch it.
The water in the sight glass does go up and down. I drained the rusty water out of the red valve two nights ago but I didn't notice if the water level was moving. I did notice the water level moving last night. It was at the bottom of the tape. I lowered the thermostat to keep the boiler off all night so it would cool and I could add water today . Now it's at the middle.0 -
Was the water level in the middle before you started to fill it?
As the boiler heats/steams and water leaves as steam the system can be slow to return the condensate water back to the boiler. If it goes too low then the LWCO should shut the fire off until water returns. Again to stress the importance of the LWCO working correctly. There is a moving float inside of it that needs to be able to move freely to open the switch to the fire. So the exercising of it is important to do on a regular basis.
When you tried to add water how many turns did you open the green valve? You can add water slowly as long as the boiler is cool enough to hold your hand on the top of the brass part of the top sight glass going into the boiler.0 -
Yes, the water level was in the middle when I tried to fill it. But it was lower than half way when it was running last night. I opened the water all the way, Slowly at first but it was suggested earlier that I should hear water and I heard nothing so I continued to open it. I waited 10 minutes but nothing seemed to happen. I did not leave the boiler alone as you guys have been schooling me well. :-)0

If you follow the fill pipe down to a tee fitting there is another valve. It is a drain valve that has the garden hose end on it.
If you can open it that would drain the boiler, we don't want to do that now. But if you can turn it just half way open and than close it......you should get some water out. If you open it to a dribble and then open the green fill valve you should get house pressure coming out of it. This would confirm that your green fill valve is functioning.
Caution that the drain valve may drip after opening and closing, so a brass garden hose cap with a washer may be needed for the drip.
I know you have flushed the LWCO several times, but have you done that when the fire was on? That is the real test that is will shut the fire down.......try it before the boiler gets really hot as the water coming out will be very hot at that point.......I suggest a long sleeve oven mitten to protect yourself.
You do not want to be dumping a lot of water out until you are sure your fill valve will allow you to add water back when the boiler is cool.-1
