Weil McClain EG 55

Following up on my previous post (http://forum.heatinghelp.com/discussion/160051/steam-in-philadelphia), it looks like the boiler is shot. Looks like it developed a pinhole at some point, and has been spitting steam and water long enough to rot out huge chunks of the jacket, the burner and some of the assembly. This is a rental and I've already had words with the property manager about their failure to keep this thing serviced.

So, I need a new one. The steam tech, who I'm generally impressed with, is recommending a Weil McClain EG 55 since it looks like that is the only thing the right size (he did measure the EDR of the system) that will fit down the stairs. Any thoughts? Are there others that will make it through a 24" opening. We got a Crown Galaxy down there before, but I don't know if that is even an option anymore. Plus, you know, it failed.

Thanks, now for the devastation:

Wow, that boiler really looks neglected. How old is it? A Weil ius a good boiler. The key is for it to be properly installed and maintained. You can't just ignore the installation manual, which is minimum installation and you can't install it and close the basement door and never look at it again. Once installed, it must be cleaned and skimmed numerous times to get all the oils out of the new boiler/piping and you must minimize excess make-up water due to leaks and/or bad vents on the system. A great installer is very important!

You could opt as I do to install an oil boiler w/ a Gas conversion burner.
I often do a Peerless WBV w/ a Carlin EZ gas. Much smaller than a EG series to get down the stairs.

I don't ever order knockdowns because everything needs to be done. I can pull a Weil McLain apart in 10 mins. Then just the block is a lot easier to menuver.

I'm not sure how mine was ordered, but the block came assembled, and that was all. Everything else was in boxes and all of it was strapped to a pallet.

    I liked it. :)
Single pipe quasi-vapor system. Typical operating pressure 0.14 - 0.43 oz. EcoSteam ES-20 Advanced Control for Residential Steam boilers. Rectorseal Steamaster water treatment
  • PEG is assembled. EG is the block and everything else in boxes like @chrisj received. Weil is a good boiler.

Yes the block is assembled but all the panels have to be put on and sealed with the retort cement. I just prefer the PEG. Simple to break down.
