Question on Ventless Gas Heaters and window insulating film

Just moved into a new apartment that rather than a furnace with a thermostat has an old heater in the hall with a warmer and cooler dial that IS vented outside. There is also a pretty nice Ventless Gas Heater in the living room. My question; for the one in the living room is it safe to seal the living room windows with plastic for winter? If not can I seal the rest of the windows in the apartment? For those that can't be sealed in any can I pit insulation strips to at least cut down some of the draft?

No for ventless heaters they should be operated with a window open due to the potential for carbon monoxide caused by insufficient air for combustion. I am suprised that is the only means of heat as code requires a vented type heating system. Un vented heaters are supplemental only and not allowed as primary heat source.

The vented heated is the primary source; the Ventless one is a supplemental one for the living room. Since the windows are old and drafty in the living room wouldn't think I'd have to leave one open. Would defeat the purpose of heating. What about the windows in other rooms; OK to plastic them?

I do not see a problem with the other rooms if your local AHJ says it is okay.

If it were up to me, I'd move. I won't live with a non-vented heater.

I agree Frank and I hope this place has working CO detectors.

The problem with VF heaters, well one of the problems, is the burner and pilot assembly get dirty and you get odors out of it. A can of compressed air blowing dust from around the pilot assembly and off the burner does wonders for it...as long as infiltration is sufficient to provide adequate air supply.
