Does new heating zone need a circ and zone valve?

I'm looking to add another zone to my hydronic heating system. The new zone is for my 2nd floor. Its a split loop system that feeds the 2nd floor. I'm wondering if I just need a new return line plus zone valve or if I need check valves, new circ etc.

If you have a split zone, why do you have a circ and a zone valve? Does the current setup have 2 thermostats?
That will determine what to do next. The new diagram wont work.
What current controls do you have on the boiler? There was an error rendering this rich post.

It's a split loop is how another plumber described it. I only have one thermostat and there is a circ pump (Taco 007-F5) but no zone valve. It is on a honeywell aquastat L8124A. How would I make this work to make a separate zone for the 2nd floor?0

You can do it with one circ if the piping is not excessive.
What size boiler and pipes are you using? How many lineal feet of BB element?

You can choose to do what you want, but you cannot choose the consequences.0
