    Broomell system, or it was... once upon a time... @Steamhead knows all about them; I don't, but as I recall they are discussed in the Lost Art, and they are a vapour system.

    That near boiler piping is... um... unfortunate.

    Yes near boiler piping a mess, couldn't see or find any vents.

    Jamie nailed it.

    The Broomell system would have had a cast-iron "condensing radiator" hanging from the ceiling near the boiler. The dry returns routed air into one end of this, and the other end connected to the chimney. The chimney draft helped pull air from the system.

    I worked on a VECO system once that had a similar setup when it was installed. Some knucklehead had screwed up the piping so the air couldn't vent, and the system did not heat well. Once it was fixed, everything heated great.

    This system appears in chapter 15 of Dan's book "The Lost Art of Steam Heating".

    Near boiler piping could use some work...bet the installer of the insulation was proud of that job too...lol
