its a sad day when this happens @ChrisJ ....customer called me for a scorched warm air system...the demo guy just happened to be there when i arrived.... customer told me my estimate was too high lol. Sad thing is he is going to live in the home....ive seen people rip out steam systems so the tenant can pay for there own gas ....but he is going to live there....i thought this is crazy to do...."cant fix stupid"

You can use both with steam.
I have 9 thick tube, and one thin tube in my house.

Damn shame, but as @Steamhead always says..................

Single pipe 392sqft system with an EG-40 rated for 325sqft and it's silent and balanced at all times.

PaulS, my condolences to the family.
Do you know the approximate age of the piping? I understand you did not do the sawing, but from what I see of the wall thickness of the pipes those must have been the steam supply.

I will have to present a case in the future to convince a board that their 1955 steam piping is still sound and should retain the system. The other half of the system is from 1917 or so but is a 1 pipe chopped up system, not leaking but needs some upgrade.

It is a major proposed renovation for a high school and of course the advice from the "Professionals" is to tear out all the steam system and go for HW.
