    I believe the Koreans used to drop a chunk of coal in the middle of their floors and have some manner of radiant heat.

    The ondol -- a fairly sophisticated system for its day.

    I served in Korea for a year and I can tell you they have had good radiant heat for almost 3,000 years. It gets very cold in Korea, the villages were comprised of earthen huts with a built up earthen floor and a thatched roof. They burned charcoal in a pit on one side of the hut and the flue traveled under the earthen floor and exited on the other side of the hut, as a result the floor was nice and warm.
