Wow. To each their own, but that guy would be too much for me to handle. Glad he's not my neighbor.

Great article, I have to admit being a bit of a squeak myself. Don't get me wrong I don't have a problem buying an expensive turntable every 30 years or a nice flat panel TV when the old set died.

I do as much of my own repair work as I can (getting harder as I age) and can usually fix anything that breaks. My weakness is good stereo equipment and the music that goes with it (and the occasional bottle of sour mash). Last year I bought a broken Hafler amp on ebay and spent hundreds of dollars upgrading it. The result is an amplifier that sounds better than anything you could buy for three or four thousand dollars new. i drive that amp with a Conrad Johnson preamp that I bought used for $500 in 1994, I could sell that preamp today for $600 - good equipment does not drop in value.

I'll spend what I have to to get what I want and I paid for it by not spending what I don't have to. I was working 4 days after returning from Korea, I worked at that same company for 26 years and never bothered to buy a car. The subway and a mile and a half walk at the end worked fine for me.

    Different strokes for different folks.

    What a guy!
I feel bad for his kids though. They'll get picked on.
  • The article was too long, so I skimmed it.
Was there any mention of his plan to heat using a tankless water heater, instead of a boiler?--NBC

Yeah, there was some mention of his using a tankless water heater, but not much detail. I find it interesting that this newspaper saw fit to help promote this guys idiocy.

There is a point, where human lives are compromised, for less money, and this guy seriously crossed that line. He was warned by numerous professionals to NOT go the route he chose, and he did it anyway. In his mind, I am sure it "meets code". Code is the MINIMUM allowable standard. Meeting "code" is not a badge of honor.

I wonder how the code officials would view all of his home remodeling projects. I'd almost bet, that if he was crawling around in his own feces in his crawl space that it is NOT up to code.

This whole article exemplifies what the free press is doing to society. They freely throw 4 letter cuss words around, with little to no respect for the people who are reading the article, and their senses. Glad I don't HAVE to read the drivel coming out of this piece on a daily basis.

The press will be the ruination of this country and the principles for which it stands... The soap box in now free.

I watch Alaskan Bush People, and the mother and father are both starting to have major health problems. Who do you think is paying for that? Maybe we all should save enough money for food, then "retire".

Mark, that's not a newspaper. It's The New Yorker magazine.

Thanks Dan. Still offends me to see the use of that kind of language. And I am not easily offended...

No respect for us elders. (Never ever thought I'd be using THAT term. Starting to sound like my father, rest his soul)

I guess it is time for me to retire...

Planning for retirement, and covering all your bases is not easy though...is it Dan? How many times have you asked yourself....have I thought of everything?

We're pretty simple, Paul. It doesn't take much to make us happy. The hardest part is deciding.
