Definitely get the water tested. The indirect manufacturer should have the recommended sacrificial rod for the results of the water test.

You might want to put an electric anode rod in there. More money but it's only once.

We are having the water tested. It is magnesium and we have electrical company come out and also do testing. The funny thing is no smell just getting a lot of air out of system that is what made us check rod.

    What was in there before?
    How long did that last?
    What has changed?

I think it was 80 gal. before. Old tank was SS but the nipples was bad.

The house had water damage for last years snow old boiler went off line and some of the radiators cracked. So we added a zone of radiant and changed out 12 radiators to new Baxi radiators and new Baxi 40-GA boiler with 79gal. Baxi tank.

I know one wall was repaired by the gas and water meter then they installed spray foam insulation. I don't know if they removed the grounding wire.

Sorry the boiler is Baxi 1.33 GA. with tank.

Curious, how does a missing ground wire cause an anode rod to be attacked like this?

We have a water utility that treats with calcium carbonate we need aluminum anode rods or it turns hot water to seltzer water

It depends on how things are set up -- but if a bonding wire is missing on a water pipe, current may flow through the water itself -- and the anode rod is an excellent place for that to happen. This eats the anode rod away (and puts the anode metal -- often magnesium -- into the water, by the way). If everything is bonded, then the electricity would much rather flow through the wires, being even lazier than steam.

So I am sending out the water to be tested for anything that might making this rod go. I do have a PH tester and will see what it reads.

Also have an electrician coming out in the AM.

    Thanks All
