Heat stops working except 2 rooms.

Have a customer who has 2 zone hydronic heating, 1st floor and basement. Basment has a leak so they isolated but now 1st floor will stop heating except for two rooms closes to the boiler and after bleeding system will heat all rooms for a week and then stop except for those two rooms near the boiler. It has 2 supply but three returns. Any suggestion?

Sounds like the zone with the "leak" is not isolated from the other if bleeding cures the problem...

Yes but then why wouldn't it continue to leak?

One would think it would -- but is it possible that it is piped in such a way that the side with the incomplete shutoff is slightly below atmospheric pressure?

What means of air removal do you have? How is the split loop balanced? It still leaves you to figure out how the air is getting into the system.

The first floor had 1 feed and two returns so it must tee off somewhere up satirs. Someone disconnected one of the two returns and connected to the unused third zone with a shyt off and boiler drain so they could force bleed it with city pressure.
