My father spoke at my children's school today at their Veterans day assembly. I wasn't able to attend, but my wife was. He gets choked up every time he has to speak about Vietnam. Toughest job ever, nothing but respect for them all.

While I was in Korea on a mountain top microwave site, I could sometimes monitor radio traffic from 'Nam late at night. Sometimes I'd talk to the guys with out RT set, it was a very sobering thing to listen to these guys calling artillery on enemy positions.

When I mustered out of the army in 1970, the thing that still galls me is we were told not to wear our uniforms home because they couldn't guarantee our safety with all the unrest going on. I was returning from a relatively safe billet in Korea but it was a terrible blow to men that put their life on the line for this country.

I think the Army was really afraid what a returning soldier might do to some idiot that called him out, political correctness was with us then just like it is now.

When my father came home to Baltimore, he came in on a bus, at night and was scared to death. Got propositioned twice and offered drugs half a dozen times. He also was not wearing his uniform as he had heard about what was going on. You are correct it was a crazy time back then. As for your radio monitoring and the bad things....my father told himself on the plane home he had to leave some things behind him and he still keeps those secrets. He said it was a deplorable situation over there. He was a platoon sergeant and lost 8 men while he was there....one he still to this day feels was his fault. I took him to the memorial last year for the first time ever...he couldn't stop the tears when he saw that name. Didn't mean to get too heavy, just hard not to think about all this on a day like today.

Many people don't understand how many men come back with terrible psychological problems because of what they have seen and what they had to do to keep themselves and their men safe.

These men answered the call, the country owes these men whatever it takes to make them whole again. Congress should think about these costs before sending people off to conflicts in foreign lands.

    God bless all of them,

We can never be whole again as we ended up leaving our innocence behind. All that can be hoped for is learning how to live without it. God bless the Vet's!

My brother in law Gary served in Vietnam I still think he's sheepish to let people known what war he is a veteran of because of the way coming home played out. Thanks to the explicit media coverage of that war, it certainly added to their anguish.

Gary's younger brother of 8 years just the other day said to Gary that it just dawned on him that when he was 18 he was worried about where he was going to drink his next beer, but when you were 18 Gary you were in a war worried about staying alive. Then he broke down crying and thanked him for his service, and sacrifice.
