i have an old Hoffman number 15 vacuum valve leaking steam

This is probably mounted on a dry (overhead) return near a Differential Loop, on a Hoffman Vapor system. If there's steam in that dry return, one or more traps need to be repaired.
For a replacement, I'd use one or more Gorton #2 vents.All Steamed Up, Inc.

thank you for the advise. yes it is on the dry return and it is not a vacuum system any more has a vapor stat running at 8 oz. We are replacing 7 bad traps as well. There was coal at one point because there was an old coal shoot in the basement but gas now.0
