Is it okay to use 1/8 port on top of B&G 1AS-1 as connection point to steel expansion tank on basement ceiling or should I buy next size up which has 3/4 opening on top? Thanks.

The 1/8th tapping is too small for that. Go with the 3/4Retired and loving it.0

Okay. Thanks. Also, do I need a minimum section of straight pipe prior to air separator. Thanks. Mark0

I don't know if B&G specifies that. Maybe someone else will pop in.Retired and loving it.0

I believe that air separator needs 18" of straight pipe going in, though I can't find anything quickly online to verify this. Most air separators of this type do.
If you don't have that, go with the EAS-1 which IMHO is a much better unit. It also lets you pipe it either in a straight (like the IAS) or angle pattern. All Steamed Up, Inc.

The "old school" air purgers really don't have a place in modern hydronic systems. The do little if anything to remove micro bubbles. They are also flow and position sensitive.
The best rule of thumb you must use them is 12 pipe diameters upstream. 18" is fine for sizes up to 1-1/2", which covers most residential stuff.
Invest in a good micro-bubble remover, for quiet, hi-efficiency operation.Bob "hot rod" Rohr

Here's the EAS info. I believe this would be considered a microbubble type:

We like the EAS as it can be used with either a plain steel or a diaphragm-type tank. All Steamed Up, Inc.
