Sizing a New Boiler

Time for a new boiler - my Weil McLain is 30 years old and is just recovering from being repaired. EDR = 235 or estimated 74,000 BTUs. Existing boiler is approximately 80,000 BTUs and heats well. My problem is that my 7 radiators are recessed and protrude about 1" from the wall and are close within 1/4" of the wall on the top and sides. Does the fact that the radiators are recessed affect the size of the boiler, or would you think that this was taken into account on initial radiator installation in 1942, and just go by the EDR?

Water or steam, if steám and your rads are about 74,000 and you have 180,000 that's close enough. Give us a picture of boiler piping. Where are you located?

The close proximity of the radiator to the walls may affect how well they radiate but does not affect how you size the boiler.

I would use a Weil McLain EG 35, would be a nice fit in your system.

Snowmelt: Thanks - no picture, but I appreciate your response. Fred: Thanks I totally agree with your response. Daveo176: I think the EG 35 @ 100,00 BTU would be excessive. I did not mention I was on oil heat - Probably a EG - 30 would be better - Thanks for input.

    I'm confused.
If you're using oil you can't use an EG series, they are natural gas.

If you have 235sqft I'd agree with a size around an EG-30 if your piping is well insulated. Personally I'd like to see slightly smaller, but that doesn't exist, at least not in that boiler.

Single pipe 392sqft system with an EG-40 rated for 325sqft and it's silent and balanced at all times.
