It's an old Pennco boiler and was piped totally wrong. I was called because the wife got tired of freezing in the winter, water hammer, radiators only half heating, and some just roasting them out.

Hubby don't want to replace the boiler but they want me to fix it. So I suggest it be repiped properly, ohh and it waaay oversized, the house comes in at 245 EDR this boiler puts out 383 EDR.

The copper is lovely, and will help with the cost when it is taken to the scrapyard! At least you can leave the copper on the returns, but it needs iron pipe for the supplies. Maybe that bushing could be removed and a full size riser put in going up to to the (enlarged) header, if not 2 risers.--NBC

I downloaded the install booklet from the manufacturer, and it specifically calls for one or two 2-1/2 risers, the same size as the boiler outlet. I'll go with two 2-1/2 into a 3" drop header, and hopefully solve their heating issues. Also correct the main venting issues.

You might want to start at the other end first. At least make sure the customer understands that the whole system needs to be addressed. If you redo all the near-boiler piping, and main vents, fire it up and it still bangs, they are going to look at you cross-eyed, unless they have been fore-warned.
