Why aren't downflow furnaces more common?

Our neck of the woods they are very common. We have a lot of homes on crawls or slabs and until the last few years, that's what they got.
More recently builders decided it was cheaper to install an upflow and put a tangled mess of flex in the attic to absorb attic heat and put out heat at the ceiling so you are cold sitting in your easy chair.0
