I was going to guess a relief valve on the main water line. Just because it is cut-off at the line coming up and it appears to be a new poly line next to it?

I should have noticed, it's not galvanized. Duh. What is / was its purpose?

I don't know.

I cannot find it in my books. It is where the air vent is often put.

which uses a carbon post as the expansion member.



You say it "was" on a return line?

Yes was

I redid the dry return and installed a Gorton 2. The steam comes around much faster now.

Well, that's the best reason

that it's no longer in service.



See if you can find a name on it. Maybe you'll get lucky and discover it's a Breckenridge!

Frank it is on it's way to China

It had not a single marking on it, be it patent number or manufacturer name or symbol. The homeowner was taking care of their own scrap. I was thinking of taking it as a souvenir but the idea of yet another piece of nonfunctioning iron on a shelf made me shutter, spring cleaning mode right now.
