Steam-Heated Hotel!

at least partially- our room has one of those wall-shaking PTACs. The Lovely Naoko and I are on a short vacation and we stopped here- there are some glorious (Richmond?) ornate one-pipe steam radiators in the lobby and other common areas:

    Another one in Maine

We visited this hotel in dead of winter, it was shut down for the season. My son and his wife (fiance at the time). We were escorted in with the owner thru the maintenance/boiler room. It was like something out of famous Stephen King movie.

At the time they had steam, and each room had a radiator with TRV. I has a little time to look at the boiler room. I could not believe the massive amount of piping/old boilers. No insulation, but it was all painted white.

We didn't choose this place for a variety of reasons.

Looks much different now than it did 5 years ago.

    Got a couple pics

just off my cell phone, so they're not great, but here goes. These are two of the radiators in the lobby. Manager isn't around, doubt if I could get a boiler room tour this time.

Anyone else know of a steam-heated hotel?

    plenty in NYC

    including this one: Hotel Belleclaire

when we stayed there, the noisy vents shouted high pressure, and I told the front desk they could save some money, by cranking it down!--NBC

    Laurentians

Lodges there were steam heated there generations ago. One pipe. Hydro Quebec pushed electric. Most went baseboard instead of radiant.

    I got the tour

this system once heated the entire hotel but now covers only the public areas, and the head of maintenance is trying to talk the owner into completely tearing it out.

The boilers are a twinned pair of Dunkirks, badly piped as usual. There is the usual unnecessary boiler-feed tank and extra F&T traps that add moving parts to the system. The tank has only one pump feeding both boilers so there are probably water-level issues as well.

I was not able to get to the ends of the steam mains to see if they are vented. They couldn't get a hold of the keys to those rooms.

The manager I talked to, one of the family that owns the hotel, is not opposed to restoring the system. He says he will have us come up later this year, and this time we'll have full access.

I saw an old chain wrench hanging from a cut-off pipe in the boiler room, and took a couple pics of it.

The last pic was taken from our room, which looks out over the valley where Uniontown is. The sun was trying to break thru the fog that resulted from an earlier  severe thunderstorm.

I hope we got to this in time.

    How?

What does Naoko think about your steam fetish?

    "Fetish"?

I'm told there are certain places on the Net where that term could make me a LOT of money......

    ;-)

The Lovely Naoko just rolls her eyes, but she knew what she was getting into and married me anyway. I must be doing something right, since we just had our 10th anniversary.

    Excellent

I hope they allow you to bring the system back to how it should be. If anyone can it's you and Gordo.

But Steamhead, please, I beg you, buy a new phone. ;)

HTC One and Iphone 5S both take amazing pictures and impressive video. An Ottobox case would protect it decently and you could take thousands of beautiful pictures on the fly.

Many of the later pictures in my link in my signature were done with an HTC One often without a flash.

Single pipe 392sqft system with an EG-40 rated for 325sqft and it's silent and balanced at all times.

    Congradulations!

Congratulations, I trust she was getting a massage or mani-pedi while you were touring the mechanical room.

My wife thinks I am a geek for spending my non-working time here. But in the big picture it's this, or watch some idiotic "reality show" (she always has control of the remote and I won't allow more than one television in the house). We've made it eighteen years and I only love her more every day.

However she would kill me if I tried to visit a boiler room on our anniversary :)

    My usual phone

does take better pics- this is an older one that I keep for vacations, when I only want certain people to be able to call me. Next time I'll have a real camera with me.

    Another steam heated hotel

In Florida, near Ft. Myers, Fla--the Gasparilla Inn.

As it was not chilly enough to need heat, I did not check the pressure!--NBC
