What do I have in our boiler room?

I am the Executive Director of a Boys & Girls Club. Our building was built in 1928 and served as the first high school in our town. I have a HUGE beast in what I refer to as our boiler room. However, I have been told that it is not in fact a boiler. There is a date of 31 July 1900 on the unit. It has these large cake pan looking things inside that I have been told would hold water, then the coal would heat the water and would push the hot air up into a chamber, and when this chamber would become full the warm air would be pushed through ducts all over the building. What I want to know is: 1) is it worth anything more than as scrap metal? 2) I have been told that there is asbestos in it, who would I call to remove that?

The instructions on firing the unit are inscribed on metal and still hang on the wall. I think this thing is too cool to just scrap it out.

It sounds like you have a monster.

    Could you post a picture?

    Old heater(boiler)

You must not be using that thing for heat now, what are you using?

If you're lucky, you might get someone to take it away for the scrap. But make them responsible for the asbestos removal. That cost alone will be more than likely, greater than any scrap value.

    Using Now

No, it has not been used for years. We now have fourteen gas units on the roof.

    Octopus?

Does it look like a huge octopus? Air ducts going out in all directions?
