20 year old boiler shutting off on low water cutoff repeatedly... Shuts off then turns on again once water returns .

that's what the low water cut off is designed and intended to do. However we need a lot more information as to why the water gets low.
You say it comes back eventually? To the same level as before? Or is it necessary to add water each time to bring it back up to where it should be? And, if that is so, does it then become too full?
I gather from your remark that this is something which only recently started happening. If that is so, what, if anything, has changed?Br. Jamie, osb

As Jamie said we need more information.
You could have:
a leaky boiler above or below the water line
a dirty boiler causing the water level to bounce
Incorrect piping?
a leaking underground return
leaking air vents or other leaks
partially plugged low water cutoff connections
and the list goes on.....................................0
