Sight glass fluctuations

I just put in a Weil mc lain lgb 6 , when running the water fluctuates up and down about 1/4" with some 1" fluctuations inbetween, is this a sign it needs skimming? If so does the oil reduce efficiency ?

    If it needed skimming,

yes the oil would reduce the efficiency a little.  It's more a concern with wet steam, which you want to avoid as much as you can.

A quarter inch of bounce doesn't sound bad to me, even with the odd fluctuation of more than that.

Skimming will never hurt, but in my humble opinion sometimes it isn't worth the effort...

    Single Pipe

I agree its not uncommon for single pipe steam to bounce a little…I do suggest skim it and check the PH…and adjust as necessary...
