thermostat-aquastat

My oil-fired hot water boiler (Burnham) cycles on and off four times an hour, and the aquastat never gets above 130 degrees. Room temperature remains steady at 68 degrees, as set on the thermostat.  It seems, however as though the thermostat is overruling the aquastat, never permitting it to get the 180 degree level. This in turn means that the system is short-cycling. Should the thermostat always overrule the aquastat?

    What type of aquastat?

Does the boiler also do domestic hot water, and wont maintain temperature?  Could be one of the limit settings.  What are the settings for hi, lo and diff?

If you cant tell what kind of aquastat you have take a pic.

Thermostat works with the aquastat.  The thermostat tells the boiler you need some heat.  The aquastat will (should) turn the burner & circulator(s) on and off per its settings, shutting off the burner should it reach the high limit setting.

BTW 4 times per hour may not be bad if you are at design temp--but if all things were operating correctly, your boiler temp should be a lot higher.

Can you confirm temperature with a separate thermometer, or are you just going by what the gauge on the boiler says?

There was an error rendering this rich post.

    Agree

I agree with Steve. Everything sounds normal except the 130 degrees.

You really need to double check it. 130 degree boiler temps also mean it is condensing, which is bad for your boiler.

    Here is another

possibility that I have seen in the field.

The thermostats were wired in series instead of parallel. While a thermostat would turn on the appropriate circ on a call for heat, It would take The Perfect Storm before a call would be sent to the boiler.

Therefore, the appropriate zone circ would energize and the boiler would operate on the low limit differential. Kept the house warm but it wasn't correct.

    TT

The thermostat should be wired to the TT on your boiler to initiate the sequence of operation and the aquastat wired in series with the other safeties to interrupt the power to the gas valve.
