New to the site and to steam heat... Looks like lots of good reads here!!!
Just purchased a 1905 3 storey home in downtown Toronto ON, We are under going some major reno's, I have the first floor completely gutted so now is a good chance to fix or upgrade my steam components. As of right now all the valves and air valves leak. I have taken off 4 rads from my system in hope to repair the leaks and also fix the floors under where the rads have been sitting.
I would like to replace all the piping and make sure the system is correct.
Can someone suggest a "steam expert" in the Toronto area. Seems everyone I call Just tell me to rip that old system out and upgrade to Hydronic...
Thanks in advance...

don't live there anymore
Forty years ago CenturyPlumbing had a man who knew what he was doing. I'd talk to boiler repair shops. Assuming anybody is still in that businesses.0 -
hey
If the piping needs to be replaced I would consider converting it to a hot water system. The benefits could be higher efficency. You can have separate thermostats for each floor or room. If its multiple family you can also consider 3 separate boilers each tenent can pay there own heating bill.0 -
As long as the piping is in good shape
there's no need to replace it. It will outlast all of us with proper care.
Steam has the advantage that the radiators and most of the pipes drain dry when the system shuts down. This means much less risk of freezing damage in a power or fuel failure.
If someone displays that knee-jerk "convert it" reaction, it generally means they don't understand steam. Steam isn't rocket science, but you need to understand it in order to make it work properly. All Steamed Up, Inc.
