    You all

    Are just spoiled;-)

Here in Northern Illinois about every 10 years we get a sharp double below design week. We were due. But I have never seen the warning map cover almost 1/3 of the country north south east and west before.

    Soft

We rely on a lot of things to survive. City-folk are the worst offenders, myself included. Most won't even spend the few dollars to buy a generator large enough to power the boiler, by itself. Imagine how hard a life-style it was 200 years ago.If you didnt cut enough wood for the winter....you died.

    mod/con

but on a below design day, would it MOD? Would it CON?

    Creatures of comfort

Is what we have a,ways been, and always will be . Humans have spent generations upon generations inventing widgets to make life more convenient and comfortable. It is evolution, but the trick to survive is not to forget how the stepping stones worked getting here in case you ever have to back track.

    Will it?

It should MOD to 100%.  Assuming it was sized to the heat loss calculation, it will easily meet the demand.

It will CON if the emitter system was designed for that.

    Coldest day?

Give me the simplest cast iron boiler you got with a standing pilot, no vent damper, and a T87.

Mine still condenses above a return of 140

And I know it's not a leak in the HXer because the make up is off.

Combustion analysis shows 86 to 88% at 170 degrees F. And it still modulates down even at design conditions, and I undersized it by 50%. (load said 100K, installed a 50K). I would NEVER do that for a customer, but it is my home and I can experiment there without creating any issues. Makes you wonder about heat loss programs in general though...

    Yeah

Oops, I see what I was thinking was not what I wrote.

    Thanks for the clarification.

    22 degrees

Anyone else besides me in the Northeast find it odd to be happy that the temp is back up to 22? Yeah I know you New Englanders had it worse, and colder for longer periods of time.
