most of the better ones will

Most of the better or well known brands can do this .they will need some kind of outdoor stat or air sensor to read the outdoor temps, that the stat will use to decide the changeover or the balance point, that is user set, to switchover the modes. Some brands will also use the outdoor temps to help control a humidifier setpoint and to lockout various operations of the heat and cool systems it is connected to. All this will be on the web to check out.If you plan on buying one at the big box stores.Check out the model numbers first!  Most of the cheaper off brands of t-stats will not support this option.

    HP t'stat

How about a 2 stage stat? 2nd stage controls the other type of heat w/ a relay , that brings on your aux heat and turns off the HP.This way when the HP can't supply enough heat 2nd stage brings your other heat on w/o an outdoor temp control.

    outdoor stat

Need something with an outdoor sensor. Vision Pro, Prestige, some of the upper end White-Rodgers and Aprilaire. All will do that. Beyond them, I get nervous! But I guess that's good for biz

    HP stat

The stats w/ the outdoor sensor , isn't that just for showing the outdoor air temp? As compared to controlling something?

    lockout

Most stats with outdoor sensors do use that info for locking out equipment. The Honeywells, Vision Pro, Prestige, will use the sensor to lockout the compressor in bitter weather or lockout the strips in mild weather. Some will use the sensor to adjust humidity level on a connected humidifier to as not to get too humid in cold weather.
